World Kitchen Garden Day is an annual celebration organized by
Kitchen Gardeners International that celebrates the wonderous combination of gardens+humans+food. This year it takes place today, August 25th. Look out for next year's event, August 24th and the 2015 event on August 30th for another reason to gather friends and family in your backyard for a truly homemade meal.
As an avid cook and baker, each year I look forward to the fruits, vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers that I can plant and nurture. To me, summer gardens are a work of living organic art: using your medium (plants) you can transform a blank canvas of black earth into a beautiful garden. When my garden is brimming with green and lush with ripened fruit, I seize another opportunity to get creative, this time in the kitchen. Making homemade dishes with your own homegrown produce is so satisfying; it's being the source of your own reward.
In the end, I always garnish each dish with something fresh from the garden, like a personal signature to finalize the masterpiece... then I'm off to snap some shots for food photography ;)
