BC snowboarding and surfing were large factors in my choice to come out west to study. I'm passionate not only about being outdoors, but about being active and having fun with the elements around me, be it snow or water or air.
During my first Vancouver winter, I coaxed myself back into snowboarding, taking myself up to local mountains every week after class. Eventually I honed my skills on Whistler-Blackcomb and through perseverance, many solo days on the slopes, and my fair share of bumps and bruises, I'm at the point of riding park terrain. The first summer I went out to Vancouver Island to surf was a similar journey and test of personal limits, but I knew it was what I'd made the long trek out for. The first day I surfed Long Beach I dreamed about nothing else that night, I was in love.
Surfing combines two passions of mine: oceans and boardsports. It's also a great test of personal strength, endurance, timing, balance, and guts, especially during menacing stormy weather common to west coast BC. Last year was about picking up the sport. This year is about honing my skills.
In terms of Canadian Pacific surf, I've tested out the hotspots between Tofino and Ucluelet: North and South Chesterman, Mackenzie Beach, Long Beach, Cox Bay, and Wickaninnish (personal favorites are Long Beach and Wick based on consistency and moderate challenge). Southern Vancouver Island hosts Sombrio Beach and Jordan River, and though I've never tried them, I hear their swells are less predictable. Temperatures hover around 10 degrees year-round for Tofino-Ucluelet ocean waters, rainfall is significantly higher than that in "Raincouver", and temperatures are on average lower. Wet suits are worn year round, even in August, which on average has highest annual temperatures and lowest precipitation.
Happy International Surfing Day!
